✦ The Fool's Journey

The Fool, having stepped off the cliff, meets The Magician first. He finds that the tools scattered from his knapsack have been gathered and arranged on a table. The Magician shows him what he already carries — and what he can do with it.

When I lay The Magician I always say the same thing first: if you are struggling to find the magic today, look at your reflection. How much more magic do you need? You have all the power. Connect to your inner Magician, step it up a gear, get out there.

The Magician symbolises power — and he has all the tools necessary to create any situation or direct his life in any given direction. But he must be treated with care. Do not be drawn in by his misdirection, his tricks, his sleight of hand. He can talk anyone into anything, so be careful not to be seduced by his clever language.

When The Magician appears in a reading he is telling you that you have access to his power. You may be in a phase where you feel you could achieve anything — and you can. The symbols on his table belonged to The Fool. He collected them. He knows what they are for. The question is whether you do.

The Magician is the first numbered card of the Major Arcana — Roman numeral I, the number of beginning with intention. Where The Fool steps off the cliff in pure trust, The Magician stands at his altar knowing exactly what he intends to create.

He holds one hand toward the sky and points one to the earth — the ancient gesture of As Above So Below, bringing spiritual will into physical form. On his table lie all four suit symbols: wand, cup, sword, pentacle. Fire, Water, Air and Earth. All the elements of existence are available to him. The question is how he will use them.

The Magician's Golden Dawn title is The Magus of Power — and power, this card teaches, is not something external to be sought. It is something internal to be recognised and directed. This is the card of manifestation: the moment when will and skill and opportunity align into something real.

The Magician Reversed

Reversed, The Magician can indicate that power is being misused — manipulation, illusion, or the use of skill and intelligence in the service of dishonest ends. It can also indicate untapped potential: someone who has all the tools and refuses to use them, or who has not yet recognised what they are capable of.

Watch for the Magician reversed in situations where someone's words and intentions seem misaligned. The intelligence is real. The sincerity is not.

The Magician in Love

In love The Magician brings intentional energy — someone who knows what they want and is directing their full attention and skill toward getting it. This can be magnetic and exciting. It can also require scrutiny: is this genuine interest or accomplished performance?

When The Magician represents the seeker themselves in a love reading, this card says you have everything you need to create the connection you want. The question is whether you are using all of your tools or limiting yourself unnecessarily.

The Magician in Career

In career The Magician is one of the most powerfully positive cards to receive. You have the skills, the will and the opportunity. The elements are all on the table. This is the moment to act rather than to continue preparing.

This card also speaks to professional communication — Mercury rules The Magician, and the written word, the persuasive argument, the negotiation are all under his influence. Trust your ability to express yourself clearly and compellingly.

If The Magician has come up and you can feel the tools gathering in your hands but the path is not yet visible, a psychic reading can help name what you are actually being asked to build, and what you are still pretending to need before you can begin.
