Four of Pentacles

After certain material success, the questioner is unwilling to let go of past achievements and strive for improvement. The Four warns of becoming obsessed with material gain at the expense of everything else. Is the questioner concerned with things that have already been gained rather than open to new possibilities?

This card often appears for people who have worked very hard to reach financial stability and are now so afraid of losing it that they cannot enjoy it — or allow anything new to arrive. The energy is closed. The hands grip the pentacles. The crown on the figure's head weighs on him as much as it honours him.

Security is not the same as freedom. The Four of Pentacles asks you to examine the relationship between what you have and how tightly you are holding it. Generosity — with money, with time, with trust — is not a threat to security. Often it is the very thing that creates more of it.

Reversed, the Four of Pentacles suggests a release of excessive control — either chosen or forced. Financial loosening, the beginning of generosity after a period of holding back, or alternatively a loss of financial security that forces a new relationship with money and material things. There can also be a sense of spending recklessly after a period of extreme restraint.

In love the Four of Pentacles can indicate emotional hoarding — holding on to a past relationship long after it has ended, or being so guarded in a current connection that genuine intimacy cannot develop. The walls are up not because there is nothing to offer, but because offering feels too risky. This card asks: what would happen if you loosened the grip, even slightly?

In career the Four of Pentacles can indicate someone so focused on protecting what they have built that they are unable to take the risks that further growth would require. The position is secure. The security has become the ceiling. Sometimes stability is the enemy of the next level — and this card asks you to notice that.
