On 20 July 2026, at 15:54 London time, Jupiter reaches 4°26 Leo and locks into exact opposition with Pluto retrograde at 4°26 Aquarius. Zero degrees of orb. The two planets are perfectly balanced across the sky.
That is the centrepiece of what astrologers are calling the Barbault Basket, or Barbault’s Basket. But the opposition alone is not what people are talking about. It is what surrounds it.
André Barbault was a French mundane astrologer who spent five decades studying the relationship between outer planet cycles and major world events. Not forecasting in the vague “big changes are coming” sense. Actual predictions, with dates, written down decades in advance.
He predicted the fall of the Soviet Union. He predicted the conditions for a major global pandemic to emerge around 2020. He is taken seriously not because he was always right, but because the times he was right were remarkable enough to demand attention.
In the late stages of his life, Barbault identified a specific planetary configuration forming in mid-July 2026 as a turning point. He described it as the end of a long chaotic cycle and the beginning of a more constructive era. He called it a “very favourable placement for humanity.”
That configuration is arriving now.
A basket pattern in astrology forms when a group of planets spans roughly half the zodiac wheel, held together by a web of supporting aspects, with one planet sitting on the opposite side as a “handle.” The shape on the chart looks like a basket or cradle, and it functions the same way structurally — contained, cradled, held.

Pluto retrograde in Aquarius is the long slow renovation of collective systems. Aquarius rules technology, society, the networks that connect us. Jupiter opposing Pluto is the tension between the individual and the institution, between confidence and control, between what the person needs and what the system permits. At 0.00° orb it is not a background hum. It is a direct confrontation.
Neptune at 4° Aries, trine Jupiter and sextile Pluto at near-exact orb, softens the confrontation. Neptune dissolves hard edges. In Aries it erodes the purely aggressive posture — the might-is-right approach to everything. Its presence in this configuration suggests the turning is not violent. It is a slow dissolve.
Uranus at 4° Gemini, sextile both Neptune and trine Pluto, is the innovation layer. Gemini is information, communication, connection. Uranus in Gemini — which began in April 2026 — rewires how thought moves through the world. In this basket it is the live wire. The unexpected solution. The idea that arrives from nowhere and changes everything.
The supporting aspects — Jupiter sextile Uranus at 0.15°, Uranus trine Pluto at 0.15°, Neptune sextile Pluto at 0.07° — are all within a quarter of a degree of exact. These are not loose configurations. They are a precision instrument.
Barbault was not a utopian by temperament. He was a technical astrologer who followed the outer planet cycles with scientific rigour and drew measured conclusions.
What he said, in essence, was this: the long cycle of outer planet stress that has characterised recent decades reaches a structural turning point around this period. The configuration is constructive. It does not promise ease. It indicates that the conditions for rebuilding become available.
He expected political difficulty to continue through the transition. He expected institutional challenges. He thought rebuilding would be slow. He also thought the corner was genuinely being turned.
The social media version of Barbault’s prediction has simplified this considerably. The basket is not a magic date on which everything improves. It is more like a change in atmospheric pressure. The storm does not end on cue, but the conditions that sustained it begin to shift.
This is worth stating plainly because it will affect how the basket’s energy lands on a personal level.

Cancer rules home, family, emotional memory, and the instinct to protect what matters. Mercury retrograde in Cancer means the thinking is turned inward. Conversations about the past. Old feelings resurfacing. Messages that need to be reconsidered. Things said too quickly that need to be walked back.
At the collective level this is actually appropriate for a Barbault moment. The basket is not a call to action. It is a shift in underlying conditions. Mercury retrograde fits: this is a time to reconsider, to feel into what is changing, not to launch.
At the personal level, the standard retrograde cautions apply. Do not sign major agreements between 29 June and 23 July if they can wait. Do not assume a communication has landed as intended. Do revisit unfinished conversations from the past. Do pay attention to what feelings surface around home and family — Cancer retrograde tends to bring things up from the cellar.
The planets do not do things to you. They describe the weather. You decide what to wear.
That said, a Jupiter-Pluto opposition at 4° Leo-Aquarius will land somewhere in your natal chart. If you have planets or angles between 1° and 8° of Leo, Aquarius, Aries, Scorpio, or Taurus, you are in direct contact with this configuration. The opposition will feel personal.

20 July, 15:54 London — Jupiter opposes Pluto exactly. The spine of the basket locks in. This is the peak of the configuration.
21 July — Jupiter sextiles Uranus at 4°37 with a 0.15° orb, near-exact. The innovation aspect completes. If the 20th is the confrontation, the 21st is the breakthrough.
22 July — Neptune sextiles Pluto at 0.07° orb, the most exact aspect of the cluster. The dissolution of old structures at a nearly imperceptible level. Things quietly not coming back.
23 July — Mercury stations direct at 16° Cancer. The retrograde lifts. Communication begins to move forward again.
The whole sequence runs over five days. This is not a single moment. It is a cluster of interlocking exact aspects that builds, peaks, and resolves — all within the same week.
Nothing dramatic is required. A major outer planet configuration is not an instruction manual. It is a shift in what is available.
Barbault suggested these conditions support: questioning institutional authority, rebuilding what matters, moving away from structures that served power rather than people, and finding a more considered relationship with what information we trust and why.
At the personal level, the questions worth sitting with are simpler. What in your life has been under pressure from a system or structure — and what does genuine resolution look like? Where have you been defaulting to someone else’s authority over your own clear read of your situation? What would it mean to take your position back, quietly and without drama, in whatever area this has been playing out?
Those are Leo-Aquarius questions. The basket provides the weather for answering them.
Barbault identified the July 2026 configuration as the first movement. The second — less widely discussed — forms in June 2027, when Ceres moves into exact opposition with Pluto at 6° Cancer-Aquarius, with Uranus and Neptune again providing the interlocking sextiles at the same degree.
Ceres governs nourishment, the earth, and the maternal archetype. Her placement at the centre of the 2027 basket shifts the emphasis from the Leo-Aquarius axis of individual versus collective, toward the Cancer-Aquarius axis of home, belonging, and who we actually care for.
The two baskets together form a two-movement sequence. July 2026 cracks things open at the level of power and authority. June 2027 asks what we want to build in the space that opens.
